PostHeaderIcon California Rally Series Announces 2022 Championship Season

Los Angeles - The California Rally Series (CRS) is excited to present our 2022 Rally Championship Schedule. New events and locations join legacy rallies to fill out a calendar that should please competitors looking for a meaningful regional championship on the West coast. Two brand new rallysprint (Coefficient 1) events are planned for Ridgecrest and Prairie City to help keep rally alive in California. For the first time ever, the Oregon Trail Rally will be a part of the California Rally Series as a pair of C3 rallies that will offer maximum points for those willing to make the tow up north. Idaho Rally and Rally Colorado return for 2022, but due to unavoidable scheduling issues, the two events both fall in July within a few weeks of each other. For this reason, competitors may run both rallies but only may score championship points from one of the two weekends. Rally Nevada will take place in November, followed by the Gorman Ridge Rally with a new date in December. The Full 2022 Rally Championship Schedule is as follows:

 2022 Rally Championship Calendar

April 9: Ridgecrest Rallysprint (C1) Ridgecrest, CA*

July 9-10: Idaho Rally (C3, C3) Boise, ID*

PostHeaderIcon Rally Colorado Delivers Excitement as the California Rally Series Championship Heats Up

Los Angeles - The late spring air in the mountains of Northwest Colorado was filled with the sound of rally cars last weekend as the town of Rangely hosted Rally Colorado for the fifth consecutive year on June 5 and 6. There could not have been a more welcoming venue for the return of competition in the California Rally Series this year. The event started with a parade through the downtown business district, and featured a spectator friendly super-special stage at the end of each day’s competition. For many, it signified a return to normal after a forced hiatus as teams displayed their cars for fans at Parc Expose, and even small details like time cards were back in use. Consisting of almost 140 smooth, twisting, and undulating stage miles, the rally counted as a triple-points event (Coefficient 3) on Saturday and a coefficient 2 on Sunday for the California Rally Series Championship.

The large-displacement two-wheel drive CRS-5 class was perhaps the most exciting of the weekend. Peter Guagenti had trouble here on the first day last year, but he piloted his BMW flawlessly though the 2021 stages to get the class win on both Saturday and Sunday. The victory vaults him into the class lead ahead of 2019 champ Andrew Cowan. Cowan’s VR6 powered VW Jetta took him to second place on both days. Meanwhile Bret Hunter came into the event leading the class, but mechanical trouble on the first day with his brand new Ford Fiesta caused him to slip back to third place in the points race. He has a narrow 19-point lead ahead of Rob Shibao, who returned to rally after a long break and teamed up with rookie co-driver Bandon Panek.

In the small displacement two-wheel drive CRS-2 class, Scott McCarty’s Subaru BRZ was the only vehicle to complete all the stages over the weekend, colleting second place points on Saturday and the class win on Sunday, good enough for third place in the championship. The class win on Saturday went to Tim Wickberg and co-driver Matthew Trott, but unfortunately mechanical issues with their Subaru BRZ forced them to retire early on Sunday. Despite the DNF, they came out of the weekend at the top of the leaderboard, displacing Julien Sebot whose Ford Fiesta failed to complete the first stage. His wasn’t the only vehicle in this class to succumb to Saturday’s stages. Radoslaw Wlodarczyk, Erik Christiansen, and Alex Ramos all ended their day early on Saturday, with all but Ramos restarting on Sunday.

Meanwhile in Open class, the team of Kenny Niernberg and co-driver Zach Pfeil held on to finish Saturday’s event in their Subaru and earn top points in the class. Scott Crouch’s string of bad luck continued at this event. Despite rejoining after retiring on Saturday, he ended his run on Sunday stuck off the road near the end of the last mountain stage.

The normally-aspirated four-wheel drive Open Lite class has a history of strong performance at Rally Colorado, despite the horsepower sucking thin air at over a mile of elevation. This year Taig Miller earned maximum points in his Subaru with a strong finish on Saturday and Sunday.

The next event on the CRS calendar is the Gorman Ridge Rally, which takes place on July 31 in Frazier Park, CA. The event this year will feature 44 stage miles over twisty desert mountain roads, and count as a Coeficcient 3 event for the CRS Championship. PostHeaderIcon California Rally Series Returns to Rally Colorado

Rally is back! After the COVID pandemic forced nearly a year hiatus on California Rally Series (CRS) stage rally, competitors return to Rangely Colorado this weekend. Featuring almost 140 stage miles, Rally Colorado is set to be the longest event of the CRS 2020-2021 Super-Season. The event will hold seven stages on Saturday June 5, and another seven on Sunday June 6.

Rally Colorado takes place on twisty and undulating stages in the mountains of the northwest corner of the state. As life returns to normal, so will spectators to the stages here, which are some of the most scenic in North America. New for 2021 is a Super Special Stage where racers will put on a show for the fans just outside the town center.

In Open Four-Wheel Drive Class, Scott Crouch is looking for redemption after not finishing this event last year. He retired after three stags in 2020, but had respectable pace on the first loop. Hopefully his Subaru will fare better this weekend. He faces class competition from Kenny Niernberg and co-driver Zach Pfeil, also peddling a Subaru on these technical roads.

The CRS Open Lite class is where normally aspirated four-wheel drive cars are classified. While they may be at a disadvantage at these elevations without forced induction, Open Lite cars have held their own in the past, finishing on the podium or even first overall. This year Taig Miller will be pushing his Subaru to the limit to see how he can stack up.

The large-displacement two-wheel drive CRS-5 class is not short on competition. Piloting a VR6-swapped VW Jetta, Andy Cowan has won this class championship in years past. This will be his first time on the stages here in Rangely, but he is known for being fast right out of the gate. Meanwhile Bret Hunter is no stranger to these roads, having competed here several times. He will be taking the fight to Cowan in a new (to him) Ford Fiesta ST. Also in the hunt for the class win is Peter Guagenti who will certainly put on a show for the spectators in his rear wheel drive BMW.

CRS-2, a class for small displacement two-wheel drive cars, has one of the largest fields this weekend. The favorite for the win is Julien Sebot who comes into the event with the class lead after taking maximum points at this event last year in his Ford Fiesta. Looking to keep him honest are Tim Wickberg and co-driver Mathew Trott in their Subaru BRZ, who also had a strong finish here last year. They will be chased by Scott McCarty and co-driver Steve Bis, is a similar Subaru BRZ. It’s been a few years since this pair competed together at Rally Colorado, but expect them to be fast in their local event. Two time class winners Erik Christiansen and co-driver Amy Floyd are also in the hunt with their VW Golf GTI, but are new to these tricky and un-forgiving stages. Finally, rounding out the competition in this class, piloting a Honda Fit, is Radoslaw Wlodarczyk.

Alex Ramos and co-driver Andres Bautista took the top spot in the production-based two-wheel drive Performance Stock (P-Stock) class at this event last year. They will be hoping for a repeat performance in their Acura RSX on this year’s stages.

Rally Colorado takes place June 5-6 in the town of Rangely, CO. The rally features nearly 140 miles of stages in the mountains of northwest Colorado. For more information visit www.rallycolorado.org where you can download a spectator guide to see the action in person, or follow online with scores updated throughout the weekend.

PostHeaderIcon Rally Colorado Just Two Weeks Away, But No Idaho Rally This Year

Dear fellow rally enthusiast,

The first CRS event of 2021, Rally Colorado, is just two weeks away, on June 5 & 6. The organizers have put together an amazing event with almost 140 miles of beautiful stages in the mountains of northwest Colorado. With 30 cars on the entry list so far, we anticipate plenty of thrilling competition in each of our CRS classes.

Hey, good news! It’s not too late to sign up to race! Come join the fray! Of course, if you can’t compete, the event could still use more volunteers, so please sign up to help out.

While the excitement builds for Rally Colorado, we also have some sad news. As you may have heard, Idaho Rally International will not run in 2021. Logistical challenges prevent the organizing team from putting on a high caliber event this summer. The CRS supports their efforts and we look forward to the event returning in 2022. We encourage anyone interested in becoming a part of their organizing team to reach out to the Idaho Rally Group. This is a volunteer-run sport and the only thing preventing us from having more events is people willing to step up as organizers.

If you were planning to compete in Idaho, we hope you’ll shuffle your plans and take your rally car to Colorado. It’ll give you plenty of great seat time prior to running our three remaining rallies of the season.

Following Rally Colorado will be the Gorman Ridge Rally just north of Los Angeles, then the return of the Prescott Rally and its scenic red rock stages, and finally our newest event on the calendar, Rally Nevada in Tonopah, NV.

As we emerge from over 14 months of battling a pandemic, the optimism about the upcoming rally season is palpable. There may be hiccups along the way, but thanks to you and the rest of the membership, the future of the CRS is strong.

See you on the stages soon!

John Dillon
CRS Director

PostHeaderIcon CRS Director's Notes (8 Feb 2021)

Dear CRS members,

THANK YOU. I am honored to be selected as the CRS Director for the remainder of 2021. I look forward to seeing you at an event when it is safe to do so.

THE CRS SEASON. The realities of the pandemic have forced the CRS to merge the 2020 and 2021 seasons into a single championship. In truth, 2020 is going to be a rare "18-month year" now hiding under the "2021" label on the calendar. Fortunately there is a reassuring light ahead of us. Already rallies are happening around the country including in our own CRS world. Check out http://www.californiarallyseries.com/ for details.

UPCOMING RALLY SCHOOL. In the meantime, the CRS is preparing for our upcoming rally school. Our first school was held back in 1997, and for a short while we had two or three a year, so we have lots of experience helping people get involved in our sport.

VIRTUAL THIS YEAR. However, unlike in years past, this year's school will be a purely virtual event. We are working really hard to provide you with a wealth of knowledge. Whether you are a newcomer interested strictly in rallycross or stage rally, or you're an experienced competitor, or one of our many wonderful volunteers or organizers, I believe you will find the material to be of value to you.

CHEAPER FOR YOU! The added advantage of a virtual learning environment is that we are able to dramatically cut your costs of attending the school--not only the entry fee but also travel expenses and time.

EXPERIENCED INSTRUCTORS FOR ALL LEVELS. Our virtual training session will be taught by a variety of talented and experienced rally folks, eager and willing to share their expertise. Even if you have stage rally or rallycross experience, we believe that you will take home some useful information to improve your performance at your next competitive event.

INVITE OTHERS. Please encourage others to participate, to share our passion for the sport. Let's make this year's school--driven to Zoom by the trauma of the pandemic--a positive experience and bring in new participants and new friends.

IT'S ALL THANKS TO YOU. The CRS has been successful for over 45 years because of you, the membership. We have a tradition from the very founding of the organization of helping one another, oflending our support to the events. Support is not just competing, but volunteering and organizing a well. If any of you wish to lend a hand, reach out to me or to your local organizers. Together, we can make the best of events possible for everyone.

IN CLOSING. Thank you for your vote of confidence, for allowing me to intrude into your inbox, and most importantly, for your support of the California Rally Series. I look forward to seeing you all soon.

Rally on!

John Dillon
CRS Director

PostHeaderIcon Start 2021 off right at the CRS Rally School on Mar 2nd!

The California Rally Series is dedicated to helping new drivers and co-drivers get into this fantastic sport. Since 1997, the CRS has run a local rally school in Southern California where we combine classroom sessions with in-car training over the course of a weekend. Like many events during the pandemic, for 2021 we’re bringing our school online. While we’re disappointed to have to miss the in-person training, we’re excited to offer a program that will be accessible to more people for a lower cost than our usual training. We have reformatted our content to appeal to people who might be curious about how to get in to rally or rallycross, as well as experienced drivers and co-drivers who want to pick up some tips on how to improve their performance.

This year’s school will consist of six sessions held on consecutive Tuesdays evenings beginning March 2nd using Zoom as a virtual classroom. Classes will begin at 6pm Pacific Time and last for two to two and a half hours. Each session will feature two or three separate presentations, with plenty of time in between for question and answer sessions where students can interact with our experienced instructors.

Students may register at any time during the six week period, although it is recommended to start before the first session to get the most out of the learning experience. Instructors include regional and national level championship drivers and co-drivers.

Topics include:

  • How to get started in stage rally and rallycross
  • Basic and advanced rally driving techniques
  • How to prepare a car for stage rally (including what to look for when buying a prepared rally car)
  • Understanding controls and timing
  • Rally navigation from tulips to stage notes
  • Recce and writing your own notes
  • Advanced co-driving
  • Rally team management

ONLINE ENTRY AVAILABLE HERE
Cost is $30 for CRS Members and $60 for non-members (which includes CRS membership, a $30 value for the 2020-21 season)

We look forward to returning to our usual in-person (and in-car) training in 2022.
