PostHeaderIcon Drama at Rally Colorado Sets the Stage for the California Rally Series Championship Return to the Gorman Ridge Rally

Los Angeles – Rally Colorado made its debut on the California Rally Series (CRS) Championship calendar last month in spectacular fashion.  Set in the mountains in the north-west corner of the state, Rally Colorado featured complex stages with large elevation changes and breathtaking scenery.  Variable weather also played a factor with monsoon thunderstorms rolling through adding to the drama. On Saturday August 24th the CRS championship returns to the Hungry Valley Off-Highway Vehicle Park for the Gorman Ridge Rally, one of the oldest events on the calendar at 40 years since the first running.  Located just over an hour north of Los Angeles, the rally features a compact, spectator friendly format with twelve stages packed into a single day of racing. As in years past, the roads comprise a twisty and technical course, with big air expected over the famous jumps on Wheatfield Trail.

Open Lite was the class to watch in Colorado, with brothers Dave and Mike Brown winning not just the class but the event overall in their Subaru Impreza RS.  They had a clean sweep of stage wins in their home event, which solidifies their lead coming into the Gorman Ridge Rally. Second place in class went to Krishna Gandhi who rolled his Subaru Impreza wagon on the last stage, but kept going to cross the finish line in true press-on-regardless fashion!  Going into the Gorman Ridge Rally there is a close battle for second place between last year’s championship team of driver Kurt Northup and co-driver Will Smith, and Michael Seidman and co-driver Tommy Luhrs. The pair of Subarus will be battling each other on the twisty stages and keeping the Brown brothers honest.  The Gorman stages can be unforgiving, with many overconfident drivers ending up stuck on a berm, car teetering over the edge of a cliff.

CRS members in the Open Four-Wheel Drive class had some hard luck in Colorado, with both the teams of Travis Fienhage / Ryan Dunham and Ernie Manansala / Steven Harrell retired by the end of the first stage.  Manansala’s heroic crew was able to replace the transmission in his Subaru overnight and return for Saturday’s stages. The stages at Gorman will provide Manansala an opportunity to move up the championship standings.

Performance-Stock, the production based two-wheel drive class for cars less than $4,000 Blue-Book has been a mainstay in the CRS championship for decades, and the entry list for Gorman shows the class is still going strong.  With six entries, it is the largest class in the rally! Driving a VW Golf GTI, the wife and husband team of Jen and Terry Stonecipher have a large lead in the championship thanks to their double win at Idaho Rally International earlier this season.  They will face competition from Chris Palermo and Andres Bautista in a Toyota Tacoma, as well as Travis Fienhage and John Dillon. Fienhage rolled his Subaru at Rally Colorado, but will be competing at Gorman in a borrowed Dodge Neon.

The large displacement, two-wheel drive CRS-5 class has Brian Tullio returning in his Mazda MX-3.  Tullio has been very fast in that car, but was forced to withdraw from High Desert Trails earlier this season with overheating issues.  A strong finish at Gorman would move him up the leaderboard.

In the small-displacement two-wheel drive CRS-2 class, Kyle McLennan and Nick Cheever also suffered from bad luck in Rally Colorado.  A transmission failure in their Ford Escort forced them to withdraw after three stages. As if that wasn’t enough of a setback, after repairing the transmission, McLennan rolled the car at a rallycross just two weeks before the Gorman Ridge Rally.  After a mad scramble to pound the body panels back into shape the team will be ready to take the start this Saturday.

The Gorman Ridge Rally has a reputation for Side-by-Side (SxS) utility vehicles fighting with the cars for the overall lead.  This year promises to be no different with Stephane Verdier and Erica Sacks, who will be competing in the SxS Production Turbo class with their Polaris RZR XP Turbo.  Verdier hold the stage record on three of the stages being run this year, so expect them to be setting top times and possibly clinching the class championship.

The Gorman Ridge Rally is based in Lebec, CA, located just one hour north of the Los Angeles metropolitan area.  The rally features 48 miles of hard-packed dirt stages located within the Hungry Valley Off-Road Vehicle Park. For more information, including a spectator guide with instructions on how to see the action in person, visit http://gormanridgerally.com/.

PostHeaderIcon 2019 California Rally Series Returns to Idaho for the Idaho Rally International this weekend!

Los Angeles – The California Rally Series (CRS) Rally Championship returns to the mountains north of Boise, ID for the Idaho Rally International. The rally is back on the CRS calendar after a one year hiatus, but still has the same smooth and flowing roads that makes it a driver favorite. Competition takes place on June 22 and 23, 2019, with each day counting as a triple points event (Coefficient 3) towards the championship. The rally is the first of three sanctioned by the American Rally Association (ARA) on this year’s CRS calendar (along with Rally Colorado and Prescott Rally). Idaho Rally International also marks the first event of the CRS Side by Side Championship, followed by Rally Colorado and the Gorman Ridge Rally. The festivities will kick off with a parc expose at Larry Miller Subaru in Boise, ID between 4:30pm and 6:30pm Friday evening where the fans will have an opportunity to meet the teams and check out the rally cars.

Hot off their victory at the High Desert Trails Rally last month, Jason Cochell and co-driver Robert Maselli are leading the Open Four-Wheel Drive class with their Subaru Impreza. They will face stiff competition in Idaho from last year’s class winner Flynn Baglin who teams up again with co-driver Alix Hakala, in his Subaru Impreza STI.   Ernie Manasala made the move from Open Lite to Open Four-Wheel Drive at High Desert Trails but was forced to withdraw. He is teamed up with veteran co-driver John Dillon and is hoping for better luck in Idaho.

Kurt Northrup and co-driver Will Smith come into Idaho in a familiar position leading the normally aspirated four-wheel drive Open Lite class in their Subaru Impreza. Class rivals Michael Seidman and co-driver Tommy Luhrs, also in a Subaru Impreza, were just about matching their pace at the last event, but fell short by less than a minute. With so many points at stake in Idaho they could catapult into the class lead with a strong finish.

2017 CRS-5 champion Andrew Cowan started off the season with a win in the large-displacement two-wheel drive class. He will be looking to build on that lead at Idaho with his VR6 powered VW Jetta. He will face stiff competition from Brad Morris and co-driver Doug Nagy who are always a contender in their Mitsubishi Lancer.

The small displacement CRS-2 class always has a strong turnout. Erik Christiansen and co-driver Amy Floyd come into the event in the championship lead. Their VW Golf GTI will be up against Eliza Coleman and Andres Bautista in their Scion xD, as well as Kyle Mclennan and Tom Giese in a Ford Escort ZX2.

The Performance Stock (P-Stock) class is a CRS tradition, where lightly modified cars with Blue Book values less than $4,000 ensure the competition is more a battle of driver skill than all out power. The VW Golf GTI of Jen and Terry Stonecipher has been a mainstay in this class over the last few years. They return to the twisty stages of Idaho looking to take the fight to more powerful cars.

Side by Side (SxS) utility vehicles have exploded in popularity recently, and the California Rally Series has responded with dedicated classes for turbocharged and normally aspirated SxS vehicles. The tight and twisty Idaho stages are well suited to these short wheelbase vehicles, and it would not be surprising to see them in the front end of the field, especially with an experienced driver behind the wheel such as Stephane Verdier who will be in a Polaris RZR XPT.

The Idaho Rally International takes place June 22-23, and is based in Boise, ID and stages out of Idaho City, ID. The 2019 running of the rally features over 120 miles of smooth, twisty, and flowing stage roads. For more information and a spectator guide visit http://idahorally.org/.

PostHeaderIcon California Rally Series 2019 Rally Championship blasts off with the High Desert Trails Performance Rally

Los Angeles On Saturday May 4th, the high desert outside of Ridgecrest, CA saw an array of prepped rally cars racing from the valley floor to the forest on Mount Piute as the High Desert Trails Performance Rally kicked off the 45th season of the California Rally Series.  With high speed blasts down wide hard-packed dirt to sandy washes to switchbacks climbing the side of a mountain to tarmac s-curves, this rally is known for offering the most diverse stages in the championship.  Once again the course did not disappoint and despite no lack of blind turns and harrowing exposures, not a single team had an off that ended their rally.

In the Open Four-Wheel Drive class, Jason Cochell and co-driver Robert Maselli won the class and the rally overall in their Subaru Impreza.  The team had a dominating performance, setting either the fastest or second fastest time on every stage. They had close competition from 2018 Rookie of the Year and Performance Stock champ Travis Fienhage, who moved up into Open class for this event.  He and co-driver Ryan Dunham jumped into an early lead in the rally despite Fienhage only having owned his Subaru for barely a week. Unfortunately, a broken driveshaft left them stranded on the side of the road on stage 6 and they were unable to continue.

Open Lite, a class for normally aspirated four-wheel drive cars, has been dominated over the last couple of years by Kurt Northrup and co-driver Will Smith.  The team had a rough start, with electrical gremlins in their Subaru Impreza causing them to leave Parc Expose late, resulting in a two minute penalty. Once they got that sorted out, it was smooth sailing all the way to the finish.  They extended their winning streak, which goes all the way back to the start of 2017. However, runner ups Michael Seidman and co-driver Tommy Luhrs showed impressive pace on the last few stages in their Subaru Impreza. If that continues they will be championship contenders this season.

In the large-displacement two-wheel drive CRS-5 class, Andrew Cowan scored maximum points against all odds in what turned out to be a remarkable display of the “press on regardless” spirit.  His VW Jetta VR6 experienced a broken transmission mount, a heat shield fire, and a water pump failure, but the crew could not be stopped. They removed the hood before the last two stages to let the engine “air cool.”  Despite the extreme engine temperatures, the strategy worked and they drove it across the finish line, finishing ahead of the Mustang of Jason Hamilton and Ralph Pond.

Volkswagens also performed well in the smaller-displacement two-wheel drive CRS-2 class.  Last year’s runners up Erik Christiansen and co-driver Amy Floyd edged out their rivals Eddie Fiorelli and Marie Boyd for the class win.  Both teams pushed their VW Golf GTIs to the limit with less than a minute separating them after over an hour of stage time.

The Performance Stock class has been a fixture of the California Rally Series for decades, and participation remains strong in the low-cost two-wheel drive class.  Ryan Orr and co-driver Joel Forty held on for the win in their Nissan Sentra, which was ironically previously owned by second place class finisher Chris Palermo. Palermo switched to rear-wheel drive for this season with a freshly built Toyota Tacoma.  He and co-driver Erica Sachs finished second out five participants in the class.

The High Desert Trails Rally was first run in 1973 on roads to the Southeast and West of Ridgecrest, CA.  This year’s event featured over 80 stage miles of smooth stages from the desert floor to mountain switchbacks.  Located just two and a half hours north of Los Angeles, the competitor friendly format makes this a perfect season opener for the California Rally Series.  For more information on the High Desert Trails Rally, visit http://highdeserttrails.com.

PostHeaderIcon High Desert Trails Performance Rally Kicks Off the 2019 California Rally Series Rally Championship This Weekend

Los Angeles – Saturday May 4 marks the start of the 2019 California Rally Series (CRS) Rally Championship with the High Desert Trails Performance Rally. Based out of Ridgecrest, CA, the event offers some of the most diverse stage roads in the championship. The competitors will tackle flat out top speed sections across a wide desert valley, hairpin switchbacks that climb to a high elevation forest, and everything in between (and a little tarmac thrown in for good measure). This year’s schedule features eight stages that combine for over 80 stage miles in a compact format that is competitor friendly, with reconnaissance available on Friday for teams that want to preview the course. A parc expose will take place at the Springhill Suites in Ridgecrest, CA on Friday at 6pm allowing fans to get up close and check out all the cars.

Last year Santiago Caballero was leading Open Four-Wheel Drive class, and the rally overall, when a busted tie-rod caused him to retire from the event. He is teamed up with co-driver Richard Dickson this event, and they will be looking to put their Subaru Impreza at the top of the leaderboard. However, there are two drivers that are moving up into Open Four-Wheel Drive class that will be putting up a fight. Last season’s Performance Stock champion Travis Fienhage has swapped his Dodge Neon for a Subaru Impreza and is teamed up with journeyman co-driver Ryan Dunham for his Open class debut. Expect them to set some fast times as he gets used to the increased power and traction. Also moving into Open class is Ernie Manansala, who competed in Open Lite the last two seasons. Sitting next to him will be veteran co-driver Alix Hakala, who has experience running at the top end at this rally.

Returning once again in the normally-aspirated four-wheel drive Open Lite class are two-time class champions Kurt Northrup and co-driver Will Smith in their Subaru Impreza. They will be focused on extending their class victory streak into 2019. Expect Michael Seidman and co-driver Tommy Luhrs, also competing in a Subaru Impreza, to keep them honest.

The large-displacement two-wheel drive CRS-5 class has a healthy field with a number of drivers who will be shooting for the class victory. High Desert Trails marks the return of Brian Tullio, who sat out last season in order to rebuild his Mazda MX-3 after he rolled it at the Prescott Rally in 2017. Tullio showed impressive speed with that car before the crash, so don’t be surprised to see him and veteran co-driver John Dillon fighting for the overall podium. However, Andrew Cowan is a proven fast driver in his VR6 powered VW Jetta. Expect him and co-driver Tim Brown to be trading stage times with Tullio/Dillon. Meanwhile last year’s CRS-5 champions Fred Hatch and co-driver Charles Grabow are looking to repeat their winning ways in 2019. Hatch/Grabow got faster with every stage here last year, beating all other two-wheel drive competitors on the final “power stage.”

Last year Eddie Fiorelli took the overall win in his CRS-2 (small-displacement two-wheel drive) VW Golf GTI. He will have experienced co-driver Marie Boyd calling notes as he tries for a repeat. Battling him in the CRS-2 class will be Erik Christiansen and co-driver Amy Floyd, who were only seconds behind Fiorelli last year in their own VW Golf GTI. Joining the battle in CRS-2 Eliza Coleman and co-driver Andres Bautista in a Scion xD. Coleman has been consistently gaining speed with each event.

The production-based two-wheel drive Performance Stock (P-Stock) class is shaping up to be a tight race as well. Chris Palermo will be debuting a new vehicle (a Toyota Tacoma) and a new co-driver – Danny Downey. They will have competition from Jen Stonecipher, who was runner up in the 2018 P-Stock championship. She will be joined by her husband Terry Stonecipher in the right seat of their VW Golf GTI. Jonathan Compton and Daniel Keyes had a strong finish here last year, and will be looking to improve on that in their Ford Focus.

The High Desert Trails Rally was first run in 1973 on roads to the Southeast and West of Ridgecrest, CA. This year’s event features over 80 stage miles of smooth stages from the desert floor to mountain switchbacks. Located just two and a half hours north of Los Angeles, the competitor friendly format makes this a perfect season opener for the California Rally Series. PostHeaderIcon The 2019 CRS Rallycross Championship is revving to go!

crsjamesveatchiiiThe California Rally Series (CRS) Rallycross Championship is gearing up to be a fun-filled and competitive year. The competition in 2018 was exciting, and there are plenty of drivers that are chomping at the bit to get back in their seats and hit the dirt in 2019. If you’re new to Rally Racing and don’t know where to start, Rallycross is probably the easiest way to get into this sport; you can compete in almost any car (see the CRS rulebook for details), and we have plenty of opportunity for you to get some seat time.  For 2019 we will have 11 Rally Crosses among venues in northern and southern California. We may even have some additional new venues in the works, proving that this sport is on the move and growing!!

2019 CRS Rallycross Schedule

February 10th, Ridgecrest

March 10th, Prairie City

March 31st, Santa Rosa

April 21st, Glen Helen

May 5, Ridgecrest

May 26, Prairie City

June 2, Glen Helen

June 30, Santa Rosa

October (date TBD), Santa Rosa

November 10th, Glen Helen

November (date TBD), Prairie City

crsdjohnkeithIn southern California, we have two rallycross ocations, one in Ridgecrest at the Desert Empire Fairgrounds and one at the Glen Helen Motorsport Park near San Bernadino. The Ridgecrest Rallycross races are typically held the day after the CRS Rally School in February and the day after the High Desert Trails stage rally in May; this venue utilizes a large smooth open plot of hard-packed land that tends to be a fairly fast course. Glen Helen is the closest venue to Los Angeles and host to multiple Rallycrosses throughout the year; although each venue is limited in the number of CRS point’s races they can host, this venue regularly sees a dedicated group of competitor turnout. In northern California, we currently race at the Santa Rosa Fairgrounds, which is in the heart of the Sonoma Wine Country, and the Prairie City SVRA Park located near Rancho Cordova about a half an hour outside the State’s Capitol. Santa Rosa is generally a tight and technical course held on 10 acres with some fun elevation changes and rapidly changing course conditions. Prairie City uses a few (of the many) dirt roads held in this off-roading paradise and the course design never disappoints.

crsrichardshrieber If you’ve ever wanted to give Rally a try- 2019 is your year! The 2019 CRS Rally School is now open for registration and offers three different options to suit your needs. If you are wanting to learn more about stage rally driving, co-driving or to sharpen your Rallycross driving make sure to register as soon as possible; space is limited for these classes and they fill up quickly. The CRS represents over 40 continuous years of performance rally, making it the longest running rally series in the United States.
