Los Angeles – The 2013 Prescott Rally marked the finish of the 2013 California Rally Series (CRS) Championship. Twenty teams took the start of the two day event that covered over 110 stage miles on October 4-5. The stages located northeast of Prescott, AZ offered a stunning backdrop with red canyons and beautiful vistas.

The new to CRS team of Tingwu Song and Martin Brady, driving a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution came into Prescott as the Open four-wheel drive class leaders thanks to overall wins at the Mendocino and Gorman rallies. The team started off the Friday night stages by trading stage times with Chris and Lori O’Driscoll in their Subaru. By the end of the night, the O’Driscolls had the advantage, winning Friday’s event by just 7 seconds over Song/Brady. Saturday’s stages marked a separate event in the championship, and Song/Brady started off by winning the first two stages. However, a flat on stage three cost Song/Brady over thirty seconds and the O’Driscolls moved back into the lead. Song/Brady charged back to win the last five stages and take the overall win, cementing their championship victory. Chris Psara came into Prescott second place in the championship, and nearly threw it all away when he and co-driver David Ault rolled their Subaru WRX STI on the third stage, but remarkably the car landed on its wheels and the team finished the stage with little more than a flat tire! The team took a conservative approach on Saturday and managed to finish the event and secure second place in the driver’s championship for Psara. James Riley and John Dillon drove a clean race in their Subaru WRX. Their solid finish earned Riley and Dillon enough points to finish third and second in the driver’s and co-driver’s championships, respectively. Rookie John Trucks and co-driver Chris Fine showed phenomenal improvement, finishing sixth in class on Friday, but managing an impressive third in class on Saturday’s stages, where they set consistently fast times on each stage.

The hotly contested small-displacement two-wheel drive CRS-2 class had three teams with a shot at the championship coming into the weekend. Husband and wife team Kris and Christine Marciniak threw down the gauntlet from the very first stage, setting times in their normally aspirated Dodge Neon that put them among the turbocharged Subarus and Mitsubishi!

Prescott veteran Brian Scott is used to running at the front of the pack in his Subaru, but showed up in a historic liveried Datsun 240Z. He teamed up with co-driver Michel Hoche-Mong, who happens to be last year’s CRS-2 driver champion. The Marciniaks took the win on Friday night, but Scott/Hoche-Mong got faster and faster all weekend, and wound up taking the win on Saturday, with the Marciniaks in second place. The finish yielded enough points to solidify the season victory for Kris and Christine in the driver and co-driver’s championships. Jason Lightner came into Prescott as the CRS-2 points leader, but battled brake issues in his Porsche. A fifth place on Friday and fourth place on Saturday meant he slipped to second place in the championship. Meanwhile, Markus and Alicia Saarinen showed impressive speed in their Mini, finishing third in class on both days. They were plagued by suspension issues earlier this season and seemed happy to have the car sorted out.

In the popular Performance Stock (P-Stock) class, the father and son team of Sarkis and Michael Mazmanian came in as the points leaders and their dominance continued through Friday, where they once again won the class. However, after dodging a bullet with a minor off that could have been much worse on the fourth stage on Saturday, bad luck struck them on the very last stage when they holed the fuel tank in their Acura Integra, forcing them to retire. Fortunately, the team had collected enough points to clinch the P-Stock driver and co-driver championships. Taking the class victory on Saturday after coming in second on Friday were Jen Imai and Terry Stonecipher in their Suzuki Swift. The finish left them in second place in the driver’s and co-driver’s class championships.

The normally aspirated four-wheel drive CRS Open Lite class had but one entry this weekend, but a solid and clean drive from newcomer Kurt Smith saw him earn enough points to tie for second in the championship with Daniel Rockrohr. Driver Ray Piloto did not make it out to Prescott, but he had previously earned enough points this season to clinch the driver’s championship.

The 26th Annual Prescott Rally took place on smooth dirt roads outside of Prescott, AZ on October 4-5, 2013. The rally is a favorite among CRS competitors for its flowing stages and breathtaking views. For more information on the Prescott Rally, visit http://www.prescottrally.com/.

Prescott, Arizona (August 26, 2013) – From the Organizers of the 2013 Prescott Rally presented by Scott Roofing.

The historic Prescott Rally prepares for rally teams to once again converge on the central Arizona town of Prescott. Champions will be crowned in the NASA National Rally Championship and in the California Rally Series during this two-day event.

Event organizer, Michael Taylor said that they are proud to continue their relationship with presenting sponsor, Scott Roofing of Phoenix, Arizona. Scott has been a part of this event for 9 years. Prescott Rally also welcomes two, new associate sponsors, Lamb Nissan and Guidance Aviation.

Lamb Nissan will host registration and tech and the pre-race BBQ as well as the final MTC and champagne spray finish celebration. Guidance Aviation will provide aerial support for the duration of the event. Guidance will be filming the entire set of stages from one of their Robinson helicopters with footage being posted for competitor review prior to recce. Guidance will also provide aerial support during recce and will be filming during the actual event.

This year’s event will cover 400 miles with 114 competitive stage miles. The traditional Prescott stages of First View, Witty Tom and Perkinsville will be used in various configurations. No turn-around stages are planned and the last of the 12 weekend stages will be a “Powerstage”.

Laengworks of Hesperia, CA, to celebrate 15 years of service to the rally community and to say thanks, has offered a $500 cash purse for the Prescott Rally Powerstage. $250 will go the fastest AWD competitor on the Powerstage and $250 will go to the fastest 2WD competitor on the Powerstage.

On June 30th, 2013 Prescott suffered a tremendous loss when 19 young firefighters perished in the Yarnell Hill fire. Nearly everyone in the community was touched by this tragedy. David Turbyfill, a long time friend of the Prescott Rally and the father of one of the fallen firefighters has set up a fund in his son’s name. The fund, the Travis Turbyfill Wellness Fund, has been established to support health care to underprivileged children in the area. The Prescott Rally will be making a donation to this fund and are asking for anyone interested in supporting this worthy cause to send checks to:

PostHeaderIcon How do you spell Southwest rally? G O R M A N!

LEBEC, Calif. (Aug. 5, 2013) — the renowned Gorman Ridge Rally, welcoming new presenting sponsor Dirty Racing Products (DRP), returns to Southern California to celebrate its 24th anniversary on Saturday, August 24. This performance stage rally is the fourth western qualifying round for the 2013 NASA National Rally Championship and also the fourth event in the California Rally Series. The rally is headquartered at the Holiday Inn Express in Lebec.

Organizer Ray Hocker said his tagline for the Gorman Ridge Rally is it’s “the place where new legends are born.”

Although the traditional forest stage rallies slowly began to fade into obscurity in many parts of the U.S., Gorman's flexibility in venue continues to provide both a challenging and exciting course inside the Hungry Valley State Vehicular Recreation Area in Lebec, Calif.

"We are really happy with the relationship we've built through the many years with the staff and administration at Hungry Valley," Hocker said.

NASA Rally Sport, the arm of the National Auto Sport Association, is a rally sanctioning body. Its mission is to encourage growth of the sport by providing support to organizers who can offer safe, fair, and affordable events for the stage rally competitor. And the Gorman Ridge Rally does just that.

“This one-day event, although it’s three roads run twice in each direction, offers a closed, accessible, yet fun, low-expense event,” Hocker said. “It’s all about the ‘sportsman racer,’—the one who does it because he or she loves it, but they’re out there to win. Yet, it’s also the event where teams can work on skills.”

Building on the success and positive competitor feedback from previous years' events, the course will once again use those stages. The route is all dirt road surfaces, which are generally smooth and hard packed with occasional rough or sandy spots. There are always a fair number of washouts and water bars; however, Hocker said the roads are graded three days prior to the event. It is also one of the few events that combine both daytime and nighttime competition into one day.

Hocker, a formal national rally competitor, along with wife Donna, has managed this event for many years. Together they organized the high profile rally Rim of the World Rally. Sadly, that event is now history after losing access to the roads in the Angeles National Forest roads where it ran for over thirty years.

“We have great pride in Gorman. For the last three years, we’ve run 16 stages with every stage starting on time,” Hocker said. “Add in we have really great volunteers and competitors who come back year after year. We also like to keep things fresh and adding Brian and Stacey Hamblin to the organizing team has kept the event vital and fun for us.”

The organizers would like to welcome Dirty Racing Parts (DRP) as its new presenting sponsor. Old Dirty Racing’s Chuck and Rick Wilson, and Jackson Rally’s national champion Keith Jackson and Kyle Jackson have teamed up to build a new line of aftermarket performance parts for Subaru vehicles. DRP will design, produce and market their products through their facility outside Jacksonville, Fla.

Also new this year is the NASA National Rally Championship, comprised of 10 events, split between the East and West Coast equally. Champions are crowned in both the all-wheel-drive and two-wheel-drive categories at the Championship’s finale, the Prescott Rally in the weekend of October 4-5 in Prescott, Ariz. The Championship shall be determined solely by the performance of the racers at Prescott Rally and no prior ranking shall affect the crowning of a champion, only the results of that final rally.

Competitors have four different qualifying paths to the Championship. Hocker said it’s “very accessible to the sportsman rallyists because they can win it in one event or one stage.” The first method is to be ranked in the top-10 in either the East Coast or West Coast series; the second is to place in the top three of a two-day rally in either AWD or 2WD; the third is by winning a “Power Stage,” a stage specified by the event’s organizers, usually the last stage, or “Super Special Stage.” Finally, each of the series’ directors may nominate a single driver who has competed in an NRS event in the 13-month period prior to the Championship finale.

For the purposes of the Pacific Cup leaders, NRS West will use the California Rally Series Championship points scale to calculate the standings for the top-10 AWD and 2WD competitors that qualify for the NNRC event. These results will be based on the finishing positions from the following events: High Desert Trails, Idaho Rally (combined two-day results), Nameless Rally (combined two-day results), and Gorman Ridge Rally. The California Rally Series, whose championship structure is based on a cumulative point structure, is broken into five classes.

Here are some of the teams to watch at this year’s Gorman Ridge Rally:

• Chinese national Tingwu Song, who currently resides in Denver, Colo., is leading the CRS points standings in the Open 4WD class after his second-place overall win at last month’s Mendocino Rally. He and his co-driver, Martin Brady, of Galway, Ireland, have entered a Mitsubishi Evo 8.
• Only 30 points behind Song in the Open 4WD CRS standings is Ukiah, Calif.-based Kris Psara, who has entered a 2010 Subaru Impreza STI. At last year’s Gorman, Psara took the class win in his first year of competition.
• Despite a mishap with his VW Golf at the Mendocino Rally, Michel Hoche-Mong, from San Jose, Calif., returns driving a rented car prepared by Streetwise Motorsports in the 2WD/CRS-2 class. His first-in-class win at the Idaho Rally qualifies him for the NNRC/2WD. Marie Boyd, from Bishop, Calif., will call the notes once again.
• Chuck Wilson is moving from his 2WD-class Ford Escort into a 4WD Subaru STI, which his team, Old Dirty Racing, will unveil at Gorman. He’s teamed up with national champion Keith Jackson and Jackson Rally. Their company, DRP, is also the event’s presenting sponsor. Rally driver Leelyn Pritchard will provide his experience from the navigator’s seat.

Gorman Ridge Rally is famous for its barbecue during the dinner break. This year it will be during the rally's mid-point and provided by the local Boy Scouts. Post-event beer is provided by Karl Strauss Brewing Company.

The event also features live scoring, presented by RallyData.com, available through the event's website.

As an added bonus, for those who want to follow the event's social media efforts, there will be live text-based updates, using a custom, proprietary application aptly called Live Text as well as the other popular methods.
